Lea Schulte-Droesch (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen): “Making place through ritual – Land, environment and region among the Santal of Middle India”
According to performative ritual theory, rituals have effects. They regularly create and affirm cultural concepts.Based on ethnographic fieldwork among the Santal, one of the largest tribal societies of Middle India, I aim to show, how different rituals both reveal and continuously recreate notions of place. In three parts, my research addresses ideas of land and rootedness in this land, cultural perceptions of the environment and Santal political activism prominent in the area of my fieldwork.
By introducing various ritual contexts, my research reveals the dynamics of rituals, as their actors engage with a changing political situation in India. I hereby draw a contemporary picture of the practice of making place through ritual among the Santal.
